"I do not enter this garden as a victim. I enter it as one who knows what the garden produces. Christ entered Gethsemane knowing the cross was ahead and still called it victory. I enter this fast knowing that what is pressed out of me over these seven days will carry the weight of His glory."
From גַת (gat, a pressing vat) and שֶׁמֶן (shemen, oil). The very name of the garden declared the purpose of what would happen there. The Mashiach, the Anointed One, was brought to an oil press. Olive oil flows only when the olive is crushed. But in Gethsemane the press was so severe that what flowed was not oil. It was blood. The most powerful anointing in all of history was pressed out of a garden. What is being pressed out of you is not waste. It is your greatest anointing.
Before we enter seven days of prayer and fasting, we must establish the theological frame of everything that follows: Gethsemane was not the place where Christ was defeated. It was the place where Christ decided to win. When He said "Your will be done," the battle for your soul was settled. The soldiers, the trial, the cross, the tomb: all of these were the outworking of a victory that was already declared on the floor of a garden.
You are entering this fast as someone who is going to a garden to win, not to suffer. The pressing will happen. But you enter it knowing what the pressing produces.
"The garden is where the victory is decided. The cross is where it is displayed."
Before food, before your phone, before anything else: kneel. Tell God why you are fasting. Be specific. What victory are you pressing toward? Name it. Write it down. Plant it as a stake in the ground on day one so that every subsequent day has a north star.
Read Matthew 26:36 to 56, Mark 14:32 to 42, Luke 22:39 to 53, and John 18:1 to 11 in one sitting. Then read John 16:33 as the frame over everything you just read. The garden was not outside His sovereignty. It was the execution of it.
Every hunger pang today is a reminder that you are pressing. When your body speaks, respond out loud: "I am in the garden and what comes out of this press is victory." Do not quietly endure hunger. Declare over it. Turn every physical sensation of fasting into a prophetic act.
20 minutes of silence. No words. No music. Simply be in the garden with the Father. The word SELAH in the Psalms instructs the reader to pause, lift up, and reflect. Practice it bodily. Be still and know that He is the God of the victory of Gethsemane.
Intercede for people in your life who are in a garden season but do not yet have the theological framework to call it victory. Pray that God would reframe their suffering with the revelation that the garden is where winners go, not where losers land.
Write your answer to tonight's journal prompt. Then close the day by speaking the Day 1 declaration aloud one final time before you sleep. Let your last words be victory, not endurance.
What specific victory am I pressing toward in this seven day fast? Name it clearly, no vague answers. Then write this sentence and complete it: "The thing that is being pressed out of me in this season is _____, and what will flow when the pressing is complete is _____."
